Winter without the brochure

Roads, snow, ice and a building that must recover

The short version

Winter quality depends on the entire route and the building's snow system: highway, local road, private lane, parking, roof, entry, heat, ventilation, drainage and gear storage. Test them during active weather.

Drive every segment

Use Ontario 511 for provincial routes, then inspect County and Town roads, condominium lanes, driveways, parkades and stairs. Confirm who clears each segment and where snow is stored.

Escarpment weather can create wind, drifting, fog, freeze-thaw and rapid road changes between shore and brow.

Inspect roof and entry logic

Map snow shedding away from doors, decks, vehicles and neighbours. Review roof valleys, heat loss, ice dams, drainage and safe access for maintenance.

A charming chalet entry can become hazardous when meltwater refreezes. Observe it after storms and thaws.

Plan for wet equipment and absence

Drying rooms, ventilation, floor drains, durable finishes and storage determine whether a ski home recovers between groups.

Seasonal owners need heat monitoring, water isolation, leak detection, local response and insurer-approved vacancy procedures.
